From the early pioneers’ curious explorations in the 20th century, sexology has evolved into a recognized, interdisciplinary field where research, clinical practice, and societal understanding go hand in hand.
Modern sexology embraces a wide spectrum of topics: sexual health, identity, behavior, and diversity. Professionals from many different disciplines contribute to strengthening sexual well-being, equality, and rights—both at the individual and societal level.
As technology advances and societies transform, sexology faces new and complex questions. Virtual realities, artificial intelligence, globalization, and biomedical innovations are reshaping the ways we live and understand sexuality.
At the same time, we are witnessing serious pressure on sexual rights in several European countries—through bans on LGBTQ+ events and restrictions on sexual education. Even in Denmark, children’s sexual rights remain an overlooked issue. When rights are eroded, the risk of distress and poor well-being increases.
The future of sexology calls for professional courage, ethical awareness, and interdisciplinary insight. Only then can we truly understand, protect, and promote human sexuality in all its complexity—today and for the generations to come.
